The Westmores of Hollywood will Receive Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 08 (TOP)

Hollywood, CA.- Legendary Makeup men, The Westmore's of Hollywood will receive their Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008. The official word came from Hollywood's honorary Mayor, and Walk of Fame Chairman, Johnny Grant, “Today I am happy to announce an array of celebrities who have earned this recognition for a combination of professional achievement and community involvement.”

Pioneers of their industry, the Westmore's not only created, but they defined the role of makeup artists in Motion Pictures. Wigmaker, George Westmore made history when he opened the very first makeup department in 1917 at Selig Studios. George's oldest sons, Monte, Ern, Perc, and Wally went on to open their own makeup departments at Warner Brothers, RKO, and Paramount. By the 1930s nearly every motion picture studio had a Westmore heading up their makeup department. In 1935 the brothers teamed up to open the most opulent salon of its time, glamor mecca; The House of Westmore on 6638 Sunset Strip. Bud Westmore ran the makeup department at Universal for 24 years where he created the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Youngest son, Frank was a freelance makeup artist and worked with Cecil B. DeMille on the Ten Commandments and wrote a family biography appropriately titled, The Westmore's of Hollywood.

The third generation Westmore's brothers, Monty Jr., Marvin, and Michael have all made their own significant mark in Hollywood. Monty Jr. was personal makeup artist to Paul Newman and Joan Crawford. Marvin created the fashion forward makeup for the epic film, Blade Runner, and Michael is the mastermind behind the alien creations on the Star Trek series and won an Oscar for his work on Mask. Their artistic hand has influenced Hollywood in film and in television where stars were made, and most, were made up by the Westmores.

Christian Dior and the Cure For Dark Undereye Circles (TOP)

Finally, finally, Christian Dior has found the cure for dark undereye circles. No more surgery, concealer and endless creams. No, the makeup artists for the Christian Dior Fall 2006 look simply embraced the dark circles in all their glory and took it a step further...all the way to the future.

Yes, clearly the inspiration for the "black mask across the eyes" look was Daryl Hannah as Pris the pleasure replicant in the classic film Blade Runner, which also starred a young (very hot) Harrison Ford, (also sort of hot in a blond, crazed Teutonic kind of way) Rutger Hauer, (pre-crazy, gorgeous) Sean Young, and (intense, origami-making) Edward James Olmos. We remember the scene in the film quite well. Pris is on the run from the authorities for....well, never mind, it's complicated. But what's important is that, after she finds some shelter, she decides to spruce up her appearance a bit (being on the lam takes a toll on a girl's looks). She covers her face in white makeup, then uses a (supercool, way ahead of its time) type of airbrush to spray black across her eyes. Voila! Her makeup is done! She looks fabulous. In a sort of punk/goth/pleasure bot/homicidal kind of way. Having a smoking figure helped quite a bit.

In any event, we applaud the artists at Dior who are encouraging women everywhere to embrace their dark undereye circles. Us? Well, no, we haven't actually tried it yet. You try it out at the office and let us know how it goes over.

This is a film Marvin Westmore did 25 years ago. He created the makeup on Darrell Hana (first time the airbrush was used in and for Motion Pictures) and all the looks and makeups on the film.

Marvin stated, "This last week at the big Mid West show in Chicago I saw a group of young models who were wearing this same look for a hair fashion show - amazing that none of theses people know the makeup artist who created it or where it came from or give credit for the foreward looking makeup designs - I was 25 years premature."

SPECIAL NOTE: Now available: Blade Runner - The Director's Cut (25th Anniversay Remastered Limited Edition) with an exclusive interview with Marvin Westmore.

Excerpt from "The Artisan" magazine, Fall 2006:

"Camille Friend and I both took a day before the show to have hair and makeup "Boot camp." The makeup was done at Westmore Academy, and hair was done at Wright Salon. Both places had generaously donated their facilities for the boot camp. Artists were asked come along with a model. About 30 hairstylists and 30 makup artists showed up. I showed the artists how I wanted the makeup to look, on both the '60s and the '70s for the performance day. It was amazing to see all the artists interpret the looks and see how they make it their own."

Los Angeles, CA - Legendary makeup artist Marvin Westmore recently assisted his daughter, Kandace, on a half-hour pilot for 20th Century Fox entitled "Senor White." The sitcom, starring comedian Ron White, was directed by veteran director Betty Thomas, and co-stars Melinda McGraw, Yvonne DeLaRosa and Brent Sexton.

This particular production presented the veteran makeup team with one of their more challenging assignments. An Angora goat was involved in a wrestling scene that required a protective coating to be placed on the hair for protection against the film blood for continuity purposes.

Westmore Academy helps Mayo Clinic prepare for smallpox and biological warfare (TOP)

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts recently received a call from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida to reproduce the ravages of smallpox on a human arm for triage purposes. To achieve the effect, instructor Michael Pack fashioned the macules out of gelatin and painted the surrounding area with creme liners to simulate rawness. The request from Gaylord L. Bridegan, MS, stemmed from governmental concerns in recent months involving germ and biological warfare.

In the past, the Westmore Academy has been called upon to fashion numerous disaster simulations for community services. Mock drills ranging from plane crashes to earthquake disasters to terrorist acts - were comprised of various artificial blisters, burns, cuts, bruises, compound fractures, and even arterial blood sprays for heightening their sense of realism.
